Compilation of the New Tripitaka as a Digital Research Infrastructure

A Model for Constructing a Research Infrastructure for Next-Generation Humanities

Project Overview

The convergence of Digital Transformation (DX) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping the research landscape. This project identifies the essential requirements for Japanese humanities to adapt to this new environment. By constructing a model for a digital scholarly space, we present concrete pathways for the evolutionary reorganization of traditional humanities practices.

To achieve this goal, we focus on Buddhist Studies—a field possessing the most advanced digital knowledge infrastructure within Japanese humanities. Utilizing the “Next-Generation Humanities DX Model” and a newly developed “Classical Text Compilation System” equipped with AI-OCR (both developed by the Principal Investigator), we will undertake a large-scale digital transformation to realize the re-compilation of the entire Buddhist Canon—specifically, the compilation of the Reiwa Daizōkyō.

Through this process, we aim to provide insights into new research methodologies and academic evaluation standards, thereby clarifying the future direction for Japanese humanities in the DX-AI era.
